HINTS, ALLEGATIONS AND THINGS LEFT UNSAID

Soaking up the dregs of summer and dreaming of braces (suspenders), primary colours, and Doc Martens

HOW NICE FOR YOU

Photobucket
I'm trying to take my style (and this site) in a new direction - and thank God Magenta 8 just sent me a some pics of their new collection. The garments are everything I'm looking for at the moment - well tailored, chic and clean with precise, sophisticated lines. So nice - and weird I haven't heard of this brand before - Apparently it was started by a Peruvian designer called Giovanna Velasquez.

I would love to get my hands on some of the cropped jackets and short capes to style as day looks -
I highly recommend having a look at the website.

DON'T STOP TILL YOU GET ENOUGH

I reckon if I ever tried out for American Idol (or X-factor if you're in the UK), I'd sing "I Wanna Be Where You Are" by the Jackson 5. It's the perfect audition song because:

  1. It reminds you of adorable little MJ, so everyone feels warm and fuzzy.
  2. It requires musicality - it's got some difficult intervals so you can show off.
  3. His signature style wasn't so formed then, so you can put your own spin on it and make it yours.
  4. Love those throwback dance moves.
Now... could I pull off the 60s fringed leather jacket while belting a classic Jackson 5? Would it be a special moment? I don't mind telling you, I'd like to find out....

NB: I don't intend to ever audition for either X-Factor or American Idol.

I SEE YOU

THIS OLD THING?

Today I'm listing a bunch of things I want, including this outfit, and a border terrier. At my last job, there was a border terrier in the office downstairs and the day before we moved, I went down just to say goodbye. Please note: I had never been inside this office before, and it was in the middle of the working day. That's just how cute little Kingsley was.

I also want to watch Great Wall of Sound again (preview below). It's an amazing film that follows two normal guys as they start a new job working as record company talent scouts. At first, they're very excited about the prospect of finding the next big thing and spending their working day listening to musicians. Little by little though, they begin to realise that their company isn't as reputable as they at first thought. So, theirs is a struggle between their own need to work and survive, and their ideas of right and wrong.

STOP ME IF YOU'VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE

Last night I committed a cardinal fashion sin. I wore my office khakis to a fashion event.

...I am so ashamed. I tried to rationalise it to myself: "I was in a hurry, there was no time." "I looked fine." "I am still a good person."

But I can't make excuses. During the day, I work for a fine wine brokerage, so the office dress code is pretty preppy and conservative - think Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren. I was actually scheduled to go to a wine tasting that day, and even when I don't have an event to go to, I have to dress to represent myself well. After work though, I'm usually doing other stuff that interests me, like going to fashion events, gigs and dance performances or helping at my local art gallery.

That leads me to the dilemma of the day -- how do you go from wine tasting to fashion show in one day? It definitely has to be something I can change into quickly with a minimum of fuss. I put the two outfits below together with that in mind - the accessories, leggings, even the shoes are exactly the same - the only thing that changes is the top (which you can easily shove into an oversized bag).

And so my friends... Never, ever again.

PS: Even though I wasn't properly dressed for the occasion, I LOVED the Jasper Garvida show, and I'll post pics of it soon. And judging by the crowd of press and fans there, a lot of other people loved it too.

No Hats on the bed Continued. Here are a few ideas of what I would design for this season if I were actually a fashion designer. Or, what I would style if I were a stylist.

I WANNA SEE YOU IN THE LIGHT OF THE MORNING, HEY

The latest in my Polyvore creations. I went to a St. Patrick's Day party on Fri, and I was talking to my good friend about how long it takes me to get ready. When I told him it took me an hour he was like !!!! 'What!? I would have thought it takes you a lot less.' lololol. That inspired this set, which I've dubbed, 'Leave me alone, I'm comfortable.' Love.

LOLA RE S/S 2010: NO HATS ON THE BED

Photobucket

I'm thinking sheer. I'm thinking backless. I'm thinking short. Not all in the same outfit of course. But that's how I'm going to reinterpret the 60s to something that's more appropriate for us ladies with T&A.

It came to me the other day, when I thought, well it's got to be Heather Graham in Drugstore Cowboy.
Photobucket

Heather Graham is obviously quite the sex kitten, but she's been cast in 60s-era films like Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Photobucket
(sheer-ish dress, but that film won't be discussed here I'm afraid). She also played the pants off of Nadine in Drugstore Cowboy, aided only by her hair, makeup and wardrobe (also 'secondarily' supported by the director, cast and crew). These included:

Colourful, oversized cropped tops
Photobucket

Tiny denim cutoffs
Photobucket

Big bouncy, sexy hair
Photobucket

A colourful and soft pallete of clours
Photobucket

And fresh makeup complete with big doe eyes
Photobucket

To that equation, I'm going to add thigh high boots, sheer fabrics, backless tops, and generally tiny hemlines, to create the look I have in mind.

So, now and only now that I have MY overall direction and inspiration, I'm ready to take a look at what Fashion Month (the Holy Holidays) had to offer, and see who/where I can collaborate with on this front. Nice. :o)

As for the title... watch the movie.

EMBRACE THE BOOM

Photobucket

I was having a conversation with my sister Neva yesterday about the periods in fashion that inspire me. Of course, these include the 60s and the 90s... And the cultures that inspire me... which include Korean, Japanese and Scandinavian. Now, all these cultures and periods of time seem to be dominated by a waifish, girlish aesthetic that, while I can appreciate, I do not share! As various men on the London streets like to remind me, I am a curvy girl. Unfortunately that isn't what I WANT to look like. Neva, who is wise beyond her years said to me... 'Lola, you're just going to have to embrace all that BOOM you have.'

So here goes. I haven't really taken a look at the shows from Fashion Month (or as I like to call them, the Holy Holidays) because I wanted to look at them with an eye for what I wanted out of this season. What's my direction? What do I want to express?? Well, this season I'm going to try a little experiment. What would happen if I tried to combine the healthy bodies of the 50s with the aesthetic and mood of the 60s? Would that even WORK? I figure Spring/Summer 2010 is the perfect time to find out...

HEY, I LIKE YOUR DRESS

I've been sipping roasted twig tea and browsing the net, and in true gamine style, I love the dresses I've found here on gamine.co.kr.

However, I realise that my body type is more curvy, so I'd probably look better in one of these sexier dresses from modcloth.com

BUTLER AND WILSON COSTUMER JEWELLRY

I like this bling-- as usual, I'm mostly into the earrings and necklaces. Rings and bracelets make me feel claustophobic lol.

MISS SELFRIDGE SPRING 09

I love dresses and skirts from Miss Selfridge in London. Here are some of my favorites for Spring 09. The shapes are so interesting, I would keep accessories and the rest of the outfit very simple, to keep the look cohesive.
