ZEITGEIST

28 Dec 2024 - Song is Aidy's Girl's a Computer by Darkstar

I'VE NEVER BEEN THERE, BUT THE BROCHURE LOOKS NICE

Bank holiday music playlist:

{Title: Lyrics from "Every Day is a Winding Road" by Sheryl Crow}

I AM WHAT TIME AND CIRCUMSTANCE HAVE MADE ME

I'm just now hearing this Schoolboy Q song from the mixtape "Habits and Contradictions", and it's a doozie. You can imagine riding out to war, praying to stay safe but also to be forgiven, and the video just adds another layer to that. A man sitting alone waiting for something external to happen, but also standing at an moral crossroads in an inner world - where has complete control over the choices he makes. Scorcese-esque.

{Title: quote from Jimmy Darmody in Boardwalk Empire - a wounded soldier who left university to fight in WWI. Emotionally scarred from what he's experienced and with only combat skills to fall back on, he falls into the world of organized crime when he returns home}

YOU TOO, BIG GUY

{Music: ScHoolboy Q - Blessed Feat Kendrick Lamar}
{Title: Quote from Brad Pitt in Fight Club, after Lou beats him up for brawling in his basement}

ELECTRIC CANDYLAND

Status: Watching sailboats float down the Thames into the sunset, listening to Aphex Twin. #lovely

I CAN FEEL THE NIGHT BEHIND ME

{title: quote from the film Stealing Beauty, starring the luminescent Liv Tyler}
{music: James Blake's "Limit to your Love". Feist also covered it, so check out that version if you like this.}

NELLY, I AM HEATHCLIFF!

A few sugar coated pop choons (tunes) with warm, melted centres...Hooray for SIA!

{music: David Guetta - Titanium ft. Sia & Flo Rida - Wild Ones ft. Sia}

{title: Catherine Earnshaw From Wuthering Heights describes her love for Heathcliff:
"My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I'm well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff - he's always, always in my mind - not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself - but as my own being; so, don't talk of our separation again - it is impracticable."}

HOW FAR CAN YOU FALL?

So many posts, so little time. Amazing how you can not write/create for ages then it all pours out like turning on a water spigot...

{Music: Mary J Blige singing "Missing You" live in 1998. My fave MJB live performance, I think. Ironic.}

BE STILL

After a flurry of activity in the real world, we turn to my trusty blog once again for some circumspect introspection: "Eso te sucede negra por enamorar!"

I've always been interested in the black Peruvians on the coast of Peru - they intermarried with the Incas (they jokingly call themselves Ingas, a mix of Inca and Mandingo) and formed one of the few cultures that is a mix of indigenous and African influences. Another one being of course, African American groups like the Black Seminoles, like some of my family. :)

{music: Susana Baca, Zamba Malató. It's in Peruvian-accented Spanish and the lyrics are about a black woman who dances like a bird to get a man's attention. The final lyrics are translated "That's what you get for falling in love!"}
