MUSIC VIDEOS AND FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY

I became obsessed with fashion editorials, then I became obsessed with music videos. I never realised their connection until I worked as a runner at a London music video production company. I was working with a director to put together a music video treatment, and he sent me up to his office to get some reference books. Holy smokes, when I got up there, I found loads of FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY :-O!! What? Book after book of Avedon, Testino, Meisel, huh?? I ended up scanning several Mondino photos, which were used as references in the final treatment.

It seems pretty obvious now, but the director explained to me that fashion editorials are used as reference points to set up many music video shots, especially ones with female artists. DUH!! No wonder I love both! :-)

To illustrate the point, I'm including photography and a music video from the French Jean Baptiste Mondino, who crosses the line and does both fashion photography and music video. In the spirit of 90s nostalgia, I've included Vanessa Paradis' 1990 single Tandem, along with some fashion shots by Mondino. Pretty cool.
